Actually, It Is Very Near To You

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us…” -Deuteronomy 29:29

No other time in my life have I been more convinced of that verse. I am taking baby steps and giant leaps both at once into a direction that seems to be off my radar most days. I am not completely confident of this direction. Some things I know, other things I wait for. At first glance this seems unfair. To think a loving God would intentionally withhold anything from His child. I am serving He who has secrets and is refusing revelation of certain things.

But what a loving God I come to find I’m serving. His refusal is to my advantage. God has secrets. Turns out He intentionally has secrets. He is holding those things that are too big for me to grasp. Those things that would overwhelm my finite, anxious mind. Those things that are not yet ready to be pieced together in my life or for me to even have knowledge of their existence.

Even things that are true (and possibly good) are secrets that God has chosen not to reveal to me at this time. Knowing this helps me to trust God. Perhaps what He has revealed to me already is for my continued obedience and to know that those things too, are in His very capable hands. I can wonder what my future holds and where this road is leading, but one thing I don’t have to wonder about is His goodness.

The things that are revealed belong to me for Him. With Him, I will run with those revelations and use them to glorify Him. The secrets are His, they are not necessary for me to know to fulfill God’s purpose.

I do not know all the things. I do not know many of the things. I do not even know all the things of my own life, but my Maker does and as I’m told in the next chapter:

“…it is not too hard for you, neither is it far off…but the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.” -Deuteronomy 30:11, 14

This race is long and hard, but the easy part is what I have been told. What has been revealed is His word and the promise that that word is near to me, so near it is inside me – in my heart and in my mouth. I don’t have to go searching for the things I am to know. The word is near to me; as Paul says, “that is, the word of faith that we proclaim.” (Romans 10:8)

What I know is sufficient. What I know is enough to be obedient. What I know is that my God is never changing, abundant in grace, always present, and fully able. What I know is that His word is in my heart and in my mouth.

May we all rest in knowing that “the grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” -Isaiah 40:8
